Types of log splitters

Splitters are divided into horizontal — for short logs, and vertical — for longer and heavier wood. The difference is also in the splitting force and the power supply.

Horizontal splitter

Holzkraft HSE 5-520 KH splits with 5 t wood from 200 to 520 mm long and up to 250 mm in diameter. It runs on 230 V, with a 2.2 kW motor, and weighs about 50 kg — for €359.

Vertical splitters

HSE 8-550 splits with 8 t wood up to 300 mm in diameter and has versions for 230 V and 400 V. HSE 11-1100, HSE 14-1100 and HSE 16-1100 are 400 V and split wood up to 1100 mm long. The HSE 16-1100 develops 15.3 t.

How to choose a log splitter?

Choose according to the length and diameter of the wood you split and the power supply you have. Stove wood is usually short — a horizontal splitter or the HSE 8-550 is enough. For metre-long logs and thick knotty trunks take a vertical one on 400 V.

• Splitting force. 5 t (HSE 5-520 KH), 8 t (HSE 8-550), 9.9 t (HSE 11-1100), 15.3 t (HSE 16-1100).
• Log length. Up to 520 mm, up to 550 mm opening on the HSE 8-550, up to 1040–1100 mm on the 1100 models.
• Diameter. Up to 250 mm for the horizontal one, up to 300 mm for the vertical ones.
• Power supply. 230 V — HSE 5-520 KH and HSE 8-550; 400 V — HSE 8-550 400V and the 1100 models.
• Speed. The HSE 16-1100 advances at 4.6–14.2 cm/s and returns at 6.4 cm/s.
• Hydraulics. The splitters run on hydraulic oil — the tank is 8.4 l on the HSE 11-1100 and 18 l on the HSE 16-1100. Check the level before the season.

Who is the log splitter for?

The log splitter is for anyone who heats with wood and does not want to split with an axe: houses, country homes, farms, firewood businesses. What takes days with an axe takes hours with a splitter — and without back pain. The work is also safer — for example the HSE 5-520 KH has a two-hand safety system that keeps the hands away from the wedge.
